OSHA Heat Safety Tool by U.S. Department of Labor

Get the heat index for your work site and precautions to prevent heat illness. When you’re working in the heat, safety comes first. With the OSHA Heat Safety Tool, you have vital safety information available whenever and wherever you need it — right on your mobile phone.

The App allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their worksite, and, based on the heat index, displays a risk level to outdoor workers. Then, with a simple tap, you can get reminders about the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level to protect workers from heat-related illness—reminders about drinking enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, planning for and knowing what to do in an emergency, adjusting work operations, gradually building up the workload for new workers, training on heat illness signs and symptoms, and monitoring each other for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.

“Werken bij een gevoelstemperatuur van -6 Celsius of kouder is onverantwoord en kan gevaarlijk zijn”, zegt Gijs Lokhorst van CNV Vakmensen.”Het kan zelfs zo zijn dat de thermometer boven nul staat, maar het toch te koud is om te werken, dat komt dan vooral door (oosten)wind.” CNV Vakmensen informeert bouwvakkers via een sms-service en heeft daarnaast ook een gratis app ontwikkeld die mensen kunnen downloaden.”Er zijn twee meet-momenten, om 7 uur en 10 uur ‘s ochtends. Dan weet je of het verantwoord is om aan het werken te gaan of niet.”
Lokhorst: “Werkgevers moeten er voor zorgen dat bouwvakkers gezond kunnen werken. Dat kan door warme werkkleding, door het regelmatig houden van pauzes en door bijvoorbeeld een werkplek/steiger af te schermen met zeil. Maatregelen waardoor je met de kou nog kan werken. Maar zoals gezegd, is de gevoelstemperatuur -6 of is de bouwplaats onverantwoord glad, dan kan er niet gewerkt worden.” CNV Vakmensen krijgt de informatie over gevoelstemperatuur van een aantal (onafhankelijke) weerstations.

“Als het werk stil ligt door kou, heeft dit geen financiële consequenties voor werknemers”, aldus Lokhorst: “Oftewel: werknemers krijgen hun salaris gewoon doorbetaald, hoe lang de kou ook duurt. Daar zijn duidelijke afspraken over gemaakt.” Werknemers die door hun werkgever worden gedwongen om toch aan het werk te gaan, moeten direct contact opnemen met de bond.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, sets minimum ventilation rates and other requirements for commercial and institutional buildings. Standard 62.1 has served the building industry and the public as the most prominent standard on ventilation for indoor air quality.
The “HVAC ASHRAE 62.1” iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad application allows you to perform comprehensive minimum ventilation rate calculations for a wide variety of commercial buildings based upon both the Standard 62.1-2007 and 2010 versions. You can select which version to use by project so as to accommodate LEED requirements and more.
This app is loosely based upon the “62MZCalc.xls” Excel spreadsheet that accompanies each copy of the Standard (either the 2007 or 2010 version). You can do pretty much everything in this app that you can do in the Excel spreadsheet, in addition to the following:
1. Store an unlimited number of projects, systems, and zones that can be accessed and modified at any time.
2. Quickly perform ventilation calcs in the field, then email the results for further analysis on your office computer.

HVAC ResVent 62.2‎

ResVent 62.2 allows you to quickly perform comprehensive whole-building ventilation requirements for residential buildings following the most recent versions of these important standards, ASHRAE 62.2-2007 and 62.2-2010, for both new and existing dwellings.
First published in 2003, ANSI/ASHRAE 62.2, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings, sets minimum requirements for whole-building and local (bathrooms and kitchens) ventilation rates for dwellings.
ASHRAE 62.2 . . . “applies to spaces intended for human occupancy within single-family houses and multi-family structures of three stories or fewer above grade, including manufactured and modular houses.” (ASHRAE 62.2-2007 and 62.2-2010, page 2.)
· Math-on-the-Fly, allowing you to calculate results within an input box, for example, you can calculate volume by entering 40*25*8. Press “Done” and the answer appears in the input box! You may use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or exponents.
· Reporting feature allows you to e-mail a report of your entries and results back to your office or to the client.

· Calculation of the infiltration credit for Standards 62.2-2007 and 62.2-2010 using ASHRAE Standards 119, Air Leakage Performance for Detached Single-Family Residential Buildings; and 136, A Method of Determining Air Change Rates in Detached Dwellings. The infiltration credit is needed for determining the whole-building ventilation rates in existing dwellings.
· Alternative Compliance Tool allows you to determine the alternative compliance supplement used for existing dwellings when using Standard 62.2-2010. You may select up to five bathrooms for this
procedure. This compliance path is found in Appendix A of the 62.2-2010 standard.
· When creating a new project, you may use the included default project or any other existing project as the basis for your new one. The number of projects is only limited by the memory of your hardware.
· The global settings allow you to choose ASHRAE 62.2-2007 or ASHRAE 62.2-2010 for complete whole-building ventilation compliance with either. You may also select IP or SI units for your calculations.
· A full report of your entered data and results may be e-mailed from your iPhone, iPod, or iPad.
